Hygiene ratings to go online

PEOPLE planning to dine out in Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and surrounding areas will be able to check the hygiene standards of eating establishments as a new scheme is launched.

Warwick District Council is now working with the Food Standards Agency on a new national scheme.

Over the next few months, food safety inspectors from the council will be out and about visiting restaurants, takeaways and pubs across the district and rating them on a scale going from zero (which means ‘urgent improvement necessary’) to five (‘very good’).

These ratings will, from March, be available to view on the FSA website and the food business will be given a sticker and certificate and expected to display these at the entrance to the premises.

Cllr Michael Coker, responsible for issues surrounding food safety, said: “A single scheme which is consistent nationwide means the rating will have the same significance wherever people are buying food. The public will be able to use the information when deciding which food outlets to visit, and we hope that food companies will recognise that displaying a good hygiene rating is good for business.”
