How Trees of Light can bring more happiness to those most in need at Christmas

Donations to this year’s Trees of Light campaign could help terminally ill patients like Vivian Meyrick to live their final days as happily as possible.

Mr Meyrick, of Rugby, is currently being cared for at the Myton Hospice in Coventry where staff brought a smile to his face by bringing him a cake for his birthday.

The 67-year-old cancer patient has endured a tough time recently having lost his wife Christine in September and after hearing about his sweet tooth, the hospice’s chefs began working on a special treat to mark his big day.

Mr Meyrick said: “I was so choked up when they all came in.

“ It was very emotional and I felt so special. I love cake, especially cream cake and they had baked me one which was just beautiful.

“Suddenly my room was full of people wishing me a happy birthday and everyone was gathering around to get a piece of cake.

“I wasn’t planning on celebrating this year but Myton has made it one of the best birthdays I have ever had.”

Mr Meyrick, who spent 40 years travelling the world as a coach driver, does not know how long he has left to live but said he will always be thankful for the care he has received at the hospice.

He added: “Staying here has been a real eye-opener for me.

It is such an amazing place and the care I have been given has been fantastic. Myton deserves all the support it can get and I am very grateful.”
