Harbury builder’s memory still living on through annual charity do

My Dad’s Do was the new name given to the ball by organiser Hayley Green after her father Dougie died of stomach cancer in 2012.

The event, which has raised more than £35,000 split between the Brain Tumour Research Campaign and also the Aylesford Unit at Warwick Hospital over the last five years, will be held at the Chesford Grange Hotel near Kenilworth on Saturday March 7.

Miss Green said: “We have lost so many people to different forms of cancer, just recently a very special Auntie, and I know so many people out there have lost so many special people - people that have left such a huge hole in many of our lives.

“We have to keep trying to find ways to combat this disease, to help us live with, to help us find ways to hopefully cure many types of it, but it really is all down to

charity.

“I am hoping people can support us by buying tickets to join us on the actual night, or supply raffle prizes or to kindly give donations.

“I want to thank so many people who have supported us over the years, my family and friends who have helped and joined us for so many years, local companies and people who have donated gifts - we could not do this without them.”

Dougie Greenbuilt his own house in Harbury more than 50 years ago and was still fit , healthy and working at 80.

He was a big supporter of his daughter’s charity ball, always spreading the word and carrying invites around with him.

But he suddenly started struggling to eat and died just four months after he was diagnosed with cancer.

Miss Green said: “That took the most fun, loving, giving, and beautiful man away from us.”

“Seeing young people poorly at the Aylesford Unit upset my Dad so much.

“ At the start our ball was for the Brain Tumour Research Campaign. But ever since Dad was ill and he was treated at the incredible Aylesford Unit where he was given great care and met a lady called Carol Connor who made you feel you were part of this amazing family, we have always split the monies raised between the two charities.”
