The show was officially opened by deputy mayor Kate Dickson, who arrived at the front of a cavalcade of motor tricycles together with her consort Richard, Lions’ president Paddy Murphy and the carnival queen and attendants.

A very unusual attraction at the show was entertainer Bruce Airhead, who climbed inside a large green balloon and then burst out of it dressed as Superman.

Show organiser Phil Inshaw said: “It’s always gratifying to put on a show enjoyed by all who take part and attend. The weather was kind to us, and many charity groups benefited from the generosity of the public.”
