February 19, 1916

All single men of military age, who have not been granted exemption from service, are almost immediately to be called to the colours. The date upon which the first of the men to be affected by the order will be asked to present themselves is March 18. The men concerned are those between the ages of 31 and 40 who have attended and are in groups 14 to 23 and those of the same age who under the Military Service Act will on March 2 be deemed to have enlisted.

Rugby publican extraordinary, 84-year-old Mrs Emily Haynes who has been ‘mine host’ at the Avon Mill, Newbold Road for 35 years, has never had an intoxicating drink in her life. The licence of the Avon Mill has been held by Mrs Haynes’ family for almost 90 years. She is the senior licensee in the town and the oldest woman publican in the county. “When I took over the licence the house was privately owned and part of the Boughton Leigh estate,” said Mrs Haynes, who still serves behind the bar and never goes to bed before 1am.

February 14, 1991

People in Rugby have been bearing up to the coldest weather for more than four years. As temperatures plummeted with the heavy snowfalls, traffic experienced considerable disruption. While all the main routes across Warwickshire remained passable, traffic was reduced to two lanes on the motorway and side roads and pavements were particularly treacherous. Train services through Rugby were seriously delayed and one inter-city express was held up at Rugby station for nearly eight hours overnight.
