Charity begins at home but in the case of a Leamington pub it will end on the other side of world, at the foothills of the Himalayas.

Staff at the Newbold Comyn Arms are teeing-off a series of fundraising events to raise £6,500 for Coventry charity Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice with a charity golf day on their doorstep - Leamington Golf Course at Newbold Comyn on Monday May 27.

And in November, owner Sarah Miller and her daughter Felicity, who also works at the pub, will embark on an ambitious Himalayan Trek.

The pair are undergoing a rigorous training regime to ensure they can survive the gruelling Himalayan terrain with its stamina-zapping undulations.

Sarah, whose father Prof John Scarisbrick is the founder and chairman of Zoe’s Place said: “It’s a charity very close to my heart and since my dad started it all I’ve always been aware of the excellent work it does in supporting babies with life-limiting conditions and their families.”

“The trek will involve eight hours of trekking per day covering up to nine miles and stopping to sleep in tents with temperatures reaching as low as freezing – so we have plenty of training to do.”

The Golf Day involves teams of four paying £25 for 18 holes.

Players will be treated to bacon sandwiches before teeing off and chilli on return.

The golf course will be donating prizes for the best performances on the day.

Prof Scarisbrick, an emeritus professor of history, added: “Charity does begin at home and I’m incredibly proud of my daughter and granddaughter for what they are setting out to do to raise a great deal for a cause that has become part of all of our lives.”
