Former Myton School pupils attend event to mark 60th anniversary of its first sports day

Peter Inglefield, Neil Griffin, William Lewin, David Coleman, Roger Coleman, Roderick Clarke, Anthony Allen, Raymond West, Geoffrey Joyce, Valerie Humphris, Anthony Dawes and David Vaughan.

Thanks to the efforts of David Vaughan and Raymond West in tracking down fellow alumni, 20 former Oken School pupils who took part in the sports day in 1955 happily accepted Myton’s invite to the event.

Mr West said: “Dave Walker, the Head of Boys PE at Myton along with David Vaughan, a former Oken pupil formulated the plan.

“I was only too glad to get involved once again and I immediately began the very difficult task in finding former pupils. David Vaughan, Diana White and also Gordon Bigham helped to find a number of them especially when the trails had gone cold.

“David had some beautiful new ‘Oken’ sports vests especially made and I set about constructing a nice, glossy brochure, which featured items from the very first Sports Day event.

“Each former pupil who attended the event received these souvenirs along with several former pupils who, although very keen to attend, had holiday commitments.”

The event took place at the Edmondscote sports ground in Leamington, took place on June 17.

The former pupils were welcomed by Myton’s headmaster Paul MacIntyre and sports staff.

Refreshments were provided to the group, some of whom had not seen each other since they had attended Oken School, while they chatted about old times.

Mr West said: “I was impressed that David Coleman had travelled from Kent to be here and I guess that the overall efforts made by the former pupils, showed their continuing love and appreciation of Oken School.

“Roger Young, Keith White and Peter Inglefield became founder members of the Oken Old Boys Football Team after leaving the school and this team was well represented in The Courier for a number of years. David Vaughan became a renowned runner, Terence Darlison a footballer of some repute and Roger Coleman a distinguished javelin thrower. Mr Handford and his staff would have felt immensely proud.”
