Flood scheme will protect 50 homes in Cubbington

Houses in the centre of Cubbington will be better protected from flooding by the start of the summer.

Warwick District Council has announced that work is expected to start on Monday January 6 - subject to planning consent - on a new flood alleviation scheme running from Mill Lane and into the Pingle Brook under the Welsh Road near Thwaites Ltd.

The scheme aims to divert surface water run off, preventing 50 properties from being at risk.

The work, being carried out by the contractor McPhillips (Ltd) and supported by funds provided by the Environment Agency and the Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, should take 20 weeks to complete.

A public meeting in the village before the end of the year will reveal more about the project and timings for the construction works.

Cllr Michael Coker, responsible for policy on health and community protection, said: “The council is very pleased to be able now to progress this important project.

“I would like to record my thanks to the two landowners, Thwaites Ltd and the Sir Thomas White Charity respectively, and their tenant farmers, Richard and Peter Ellis, for their continued support of this scheme as the pipeline will run under their land.

“There will be a need for partial road closures at times during construction, but our aim is to keep disruption to a minimum as we deliver this scheme for the long term benefit of the village.”

Cubbington was last seriously flooded in July 2007.
