Film programme on hold at Spa Centre cinema

Film screenings have been put on hold ‘until further notice’ at the Spa Centre Studio in Leamington while the venue’s management reviews the situation.

The Warwick District Council-subsidised venue’s programme of films concluded over the Easter weekend with the screening of Wreck-It Ralph and the medium and long-term future of the cinema programme is now subject to review.

Centre manager David Guilding said that the cinema’s 35mm projection equipment is becoming obsolete as the film industry converts most of its production to digital format.

Mr Guilding added: “This has presented us with significant challenges.

“We are, however, currently investigating the potential business case for maintaining a sustainable cinema by investing in digital technology equipment, as part of the overall Spa Centre offer.

“We will continue to screen films intermittently, subject to availability and potential customer demand.

“Customers should keep an eye on our website for information about further screenings.”

The Studio, previously called the Royal Cinema, was refurbished as part of an overall £170,000 revamp of the Spa Centre, which took place in the summers of 2010 and 2011 .

Mr Guilding said: “The Studio, is a multi use facility which remains much in demand with a high level of future bookings.”
