Cyclist died after HGV collision at Toll Bar Island

A cyclist in his 30s died in hospital after being hit by a HGV while making his way around major roadworks at the Toll Bar Island.

The fatal collision happened at the busy Coventry roundabout at around 6pm on Tuesday January 6.

Officers and ambulance crews were called to the scene, which is undergoing major roadworks and the cyclist was rushed to hospital.

The man, whose identity is not known, was treated by, was treated at University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire that night, but later died from his injuries.

The HGV involved in the collision was traced and police said the driver is now helping them with enquiries.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to help piece together what happened.

Sergeant Paul Hughes, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision.

“This is a tragic event and we are currently following up a number of enquiries.

“Toll Bar Island is a major junction and I know a number of vehicles passed the scene and the occupants have not yet spoken to police.

“I would appeal directly to anyone with any information, to contact us.”

Family liaison officers are now speaking to the family of the cyclist, who has not been named by police.

Anyone with information should contact the collision incident team on 101.

As a result of the crash, police closed the westbound A45 between Toll Bar Island and the A46 Festival Island until around 11pm.

Traffic was affected as far as Rugby with many drivers reportedly being stuck in their cars for up to three hours.
