Charity will keep skatepark dreams rolling

SKATEBOARDERS have founded a charity to boost their campaign to have a new skatepark built on the former site of a half-pipe ramp.

The old ramp in Victoria Park, Leamington, was removed by Warwick District Council for health and safety reasons in April last year.

Since then Alex Walker, an experienced skateboarder and a sessional youth worker for Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs, has led a campaign to have a modern facility - costing up to £70,000 - put in its place.

The 24-year-old and his friends have now formed the Save our Skatepark charity which includes its own constitution, trustees, a secretary, an accountant and Mr Walker as chairman.

Mr Walker said: “Skateboarding and similar sports like BMX and parkour are not just hobbies or part-time sports people just pick up. These sports are a way of life to so many and encourage pro-social behaviour - an active and healthy lifestyle - and also provide artistic expression.

“Leamington is a town with a rich history in boxing, tennis and bowls so as sport progresses we need to progress with it or we will not be able to keep up with others showcasing new and exciting talent around us. In a time where people say real community is lacking, it is projects such as this that can provide stimulus to our area.”

Mr Walker has a four-point plan which will involve applying for grants from community forums, The National Lottery and other sources.

If all goes to plan the facility could include a number of other objects on which skaters, rollerbladers and BMX riders would hone their skills along with graffiti walls, a seating area and a drinking water tap.
