Bishops Itchington couple celebrate 75th wedding anniversary

The pair met in 1935 when Ted , 98 became friends with Dorothy’s brother.

With Ted serving as a dispatch rider in the Royal Army Service Corps before moving on to service tanks and vehicles, the couple’s wedding had to be put off until his first leave.

They were married in Essex on November 25 1939 and have six children, 16 grand children and 17 great-grandchildren.

The couple are regularly surrounded by their “wonderful” and “caring” family altough they still care for themselves in their own home and drive their own car.

Dorothy’s most treasured memory of their relationship is when Ted cam home from service for the last time in 1945,

She said: I remember sitting there waiting and knowing he was coming - Ted was in the army for six years and it’s a long time to be separated.”

The couple have travelled all over Europe and to the USA and Australia - visiting relatives and holidaying - but decided to settle in the Midlands 29 years ago to be near two of their daughters.

Dorothy said the secret to her and Ted’s long and happy marriage is “listening to each other and working things out together” Ted said it was “being understanding”, not bottling things up and accepting you can’t always get your own way.
