Advert: Hedgecutting competition will take place at Pailton Fields on March 20 when prizes will be offered as follows: Class 1 (open to all in England) to the man who shall cut and lay 11 yards of hedge in 4 1/2 hours in the most workmanlike manner.

Class 2: As above, nominated by a member. Class 3: As above, to the man under 24, to cut and lay 8 yards.

1st prizes £3, 2nd £2, 3rd £1. All the successful competitors who complete their work to the satisfaction of the judges will receive 5s. Entrance free. Meet at the White Bridge, on the Lutterworth road, 9.30am.

March 13 , 1970

The engineers who designed Rugby’s 353 multi-storey flats at Rounds Gardens and Clifton Road stated emphatically yesterday that the decision to remove gas from the flats was ‘quite unnecessary’. They also gave an assurance that there is no possibility of a Ronan Point type collapse occurring in the event of a gas explosion, and that Rugby’s buildings are perfectly safe - with or without gas. But manufacturers Concrete Limited have said the Borough Council must be the ones who decide what action they are to take.

Council tax bills will rise by just under 3 per cent in Rugby this year but it could have been much worse. Civic leaders say Government cash cuts could have seen an 8 per cent hike. They warn services will suffer in the long term in the Government continues to force spending cuts through ‘capping’. Council leader Lionel Franklyn said residents will pay an average of only 2.83 per cent, again one of the lowest rates in Warwickshire.
