New figures show that 78 people who have tested positive for Covid-19 have died in care homes across Warwickshire

The statistics were put together by the Office for National Statistics, broken down by English local authority area, recorded from April 10 to May 1.

The ONS said the the figures record 'deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes' - in England there have been a total of 6,391 (as of May 5).

Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, said he is 'extremely concerned' by the situation in care homes.

He said: "Deaths in care homes are dramatically higher than what’s normally expected – including here in Warwickshire.

"It is important people understand that the number of ‘excess deaths’ in these homes has rocketed in past weeks.

"As many people have died from Covid-19 in care homes in Warwickshire as in the whole of Australia.

"We now know that at least 6,000 people have died in care homes from Covid-19 across the UK.

"These deaths are far from inevitable - Hong Kong has no recorded deaths in care homes from coronavirus.

"Even now, patients from hospital are still being transferred into local care homes before they’ve received a negative coronavirus test result due to the Government guidance.

"Some of our most vulnerable citizens, and their families, have been badly let down."
