Fairtrade is more than skin deep

Freshly handmade and mainly organic beauty products are going on sale at Hatton Shopping Village, near Warwick, with the opening of The Blue Lemon Skincare Company.

The expanding company, which started as a ‘kitchen table enterprise’ in Kings Norton, Birmingham, researched its move to Hatton for two years before opening the shop.

For owner Jenny Muschner, who also has a shop in Hanbury, Worcestershire, the expansion has been made possible by more women wanting to put only natural products on their skin.

Jenny, who five years ago started making soaps as a hobby with husband Jorg, said: “Our handmade soaps, creams, balms and butters are very, very different to high street cosmetics.

“We use Shea Butter as the base ingredient for all our creams, balms and butters. It melts at skin temperature, absorbs completely and is packed with natural vitamins A and E.

“Ours is hand-produced by a women’s’ co-operative in Ghana.

“It is fairly traded, unrefined and organic. Our trade gives women the opportunity to support themselves and educate their children.”
