Eye surgeon offers state-of-the-art procedure

One of the world’s leading eye surgeons, who heads the ophthalmic unit at a Leamington

healthcare centre, says that a new eye procedure is doing away with the need for reading glasses.

South-African born consultant ophthalmologist Mark Wevill has carried out more than 20,000 laser eye procedures around the world.

Mark, who addresses international medical conferences around the globe - and gives up his time to restore the sight of many hundreds of poor cataract patients in Africa - last year joined Space Healthcare, which has invested more than £1 million in state-of-the-art equipment for its centre in Clarendon Avenue.

The centre, which specialises in dentistry as well as laser eye surgery, has become the focus of international attention as the UK’s only clinic offering a global treatment that allows patients to throw away their reading glasses.

Mark, who performed the first Raindrop procedure at Space just before Christmas, said: “It permanently fixes near-sight problems so that reading glasses are no longer required. Using the most advanced laser technology, a miniscule micro lens, the size of a pinhead and thinner than a human hair, is fitted into the eye.

“It’s made from a material compatible with the eye so you don’t even know it’s there. Raindrop fixes near-sight problems and doesn’t compromise distance vision.”

Such is the excitement surrounding Raindrop that eye specialists from Europe will be flying in to watch Mark perform the 10-minute procedure at the Leamington clinic.

Mark added: “Put simply, my job is to get rid of reading glasses and cataracts.”
