Stunning new season of ‘must-sees’ at Loft in Leamington

HIGH levels of activity at Leamington’s Loft Theatre have filled a normally quiet August as the company prepares for a new season that literally promises something for everyone.

There’s also a new artistic director at the helm, Tim Willis, who can frequently be seen treading the boards in local productions throughout the area.

Tim said: “It is in these times of austerity we now need to compete more than ever for the ‘social’ pound and ensure we are delivering the type of shows our audiences want to see, while maintaining a viable, balanced and varied programme of quality theatre – which is no mean feat!”

With the move to new premises left firmly on the back-burner, the popular amateur company has begun a refurbishment programme and is making preparations for an Open Day on October 1.

But before that, audiences can see Honour, a play by Australian writer Joanne Murray-Smith, which opens the new season on September 21 and has been described as being a “wrenchingly honest” look at sex and marriage.

From October 26, the Peter Shaffer multi-award-winning play Equus provides powerful food for thought about the importance of passion in our lives – although not a play for the faint-hearted as the plot centres on the true crime of a disturbed young boy, who has to come to terms with his blinding of six horses.

The rock-opera Rent, a modern-day version of La Boheme, follows on December 7.

And in the new year you can see The Miracle Worker and Jerusalem – the smash-hit new play which transferred so successfully from London to Broadway earlier this year.

The Loft will be one of the first non-professional companies to stage the play.

Tim also promises Piaf next April, plus one of the Aychbourn plays and West Side Story.
