The exhibition, entitled Studio 14, is displaying the work of people taking art classes - some of whom have been attending for years, while others whom have joined recently - run by artist Phyllis Davies.

Phyllis said: “We often think that talent is a prerequisite, but talent develops with experience and practice. Determination and wanting to learn are what is of most value to students.”

The exhibition features a variety of work, including pencil drawings from the earlier classes.

Phyllis said: “Learning to draw is actually about learning to see and we use our drawings to help us see more clearly what we want to say about our subject matter.

“Structural drawing is at the heart of the work that goes on in the class and fundamental form and tonal value are addressed in the earliest pieces that students undertake.

“Once they have made some tonal drawings, they make their own choice as to which medium they wish to work with. Watercolour, acrylics, oil paint and both oil and chalk pastels are popular choices.”

She says that while some students opt to use the computer to manipulate an image, others refer to an artist or style from the past to use as inspiration, while others create a faithful rendering of a subject which has caught their eye.

She added: “Ultimately in class we are looking to find each student’s strength and preference so that he or she can develop his or her own style.”

The exhibition runs at the gallery in Regent Court until December 1. Entry is free and opening times are Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm.
