Revolutionary violinists play in Leamington

The foursome - made up of violinists Adrian Butterfield and Kathryn Parry, viola player Rachel Stott and cellist Ruth Alford - will be joined for the evening by Colin Lawson, a leading authority on and exponent of, the clarinet.

The night has been put together by Leamington Music, a principal promoter of chamber music and early music in the Midlands, and director Richard Phllips is delighted to have the opportunity to showcase such high-calibre performers.

“We are delighted to welcome these outstanding musicians who specialise in re-creating the sound world that the composers would recognise,” he said.

“The leader of the quartet Adrian Butterfield has played in three concerts for Leamington Music with the London Handel Players, in those showing his skills in baroque music.”

In the first half of the performance there will be a Clarinet Quartet by Hummel and Haydn’s String Quartet ‘The Emperor’, which contains the Austrian national anthem in the slow movement.

The concert will finish with Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A, one of the most popular works in all of the chamber music repertoire.

“These three works were written in the space of 22 years between 1789 and 1811 and they represent a peak in the classical music period,” added Mr Phillips.
