Mostly highs in the life of Warwick girl Kel

The Warwick-born singer-songwriter and double bass player has recently got married and her band has been signed up to tour on the Live & Local programme.

But in her second album Lies and Hoes, named using a play on words or ‘spoonerism’ for the phrase ‘highs and lows’,the 33-year-old jazz musician pulls no punches in singing about the things which affect her and those she is close to.

Kel said: “My life is quite nice but I always end up writing about the things I see other people are going through or if people have annoyed me.

“I’ve written a song called The Circus about the X Factor and how it targets the vulnerable in the early stages.

“Django Horror is aimed at the people who ask me what I do and when I tell them I’m a musician they then ask ‘what is your actual job?’.

“If I have an emotion about something I’ll try to write about it, it’s like therapy for me.”

Kel’s emotive approach is balanced by the melodic music of album co-writer and guitarist Kelvin Leitch which means Lies and Hoes is no melancholy affair.

The album, produced at Blackdown Studios in Leamington and featuring prominent musicians such as world class harmonica player Will Pound and Dame Shirley Bassey’s brass section, is the follow-up to the 2008 release How Could I Resist.

Kel said: “It is hard doing it all yourself and trying to get the funds together delays things and it’s difficult to keep control of what you are doing.

“But it’s a lot more satisfying doing it this way.

“I’m really pleased with the way the album has turned out and I’m now thinking about making another one.

“It’s like I’ve cooked a really nice meal and now it’s time for pudding.”

The Kel Elliot Band are getting more bookings at arts centres up and down the country and, having previously toured Finland, are hoping to play in other countries and at more festivals in the near future.

Overall Kel wants as many people to hear her music as possible.

She said: “I would die happy if I could play on Jools Holland.”

Kel’s next gigs are at the Budbrooke Community Centre in Hampton Magna on Friday March 9 and at Bubbenhall village hall on Saturday March 10.
