Master showman comes to Stratford

AN eccentric and unpredictable figure in the Bolshevik-led revolution of the Russian Futurist Movement is portrayed in an intense one-man play at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre in Stratford this week.

Mayakovsky: The Slanting Rain, by Salida Productions and the Mercury Theatre, is based on the life of Vladimir Mayakovsky - poet, political artist and playwright who ecame a leading and an opponent of the bureaucracy until his suicide in 1930.

Eccentric, unpredictable and with a keen sense of the ridiculous, Mayakovsky was a master showman, performing in factories and halls across Russia and commanding audiences of thousands in an epoch of wars and revolutions.
