Hit film-inspired musical starts in Leamington tonight

SPA Theatre Company continues its tradition of performing modern musicals with this year’s offering, The Wedding Singer.

The show, based on the 1998 hit film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, includes an original score of 1980s-inspired songs.

Set in 1985, the musical tells the story of Robbie Hart, a New Jersey wedding singer, jilted at the altar by his fickle fiancee Linda. Julia Sullivan, a waitress at the banqueting hall where Robbie’s group performs, tries to help him get back on his feet again.

She is engaged to Glen, a self-obsessed Wall Street banker who is so taken up with his career that he can’t even find time to help plan their wedding.

When Robbie agrees to help Julia with the wedding arrangements he soon finds himself falling in love with her, and secretly she feels the same about him.

But when Julia mistakenly thinks that Robbie and ex-fiancee Linda have got back together, she flies off to Las Vegas with Glen to get married.

Robbie chases after them, determined to stop the wedding and declare his love – but will he find her in time?
