Doric Quartet provide a musical masterclass in Warwick this weekend

ONE of Britain’s leading quartets is playing at the Bridge House Theatre in Warwick this weekend.

The Doric String Quartet is taking part in the Music in the Round series promoted by Leamington Music, with both a performance and a masterclass for young quartets open to all schools throughout the county.

The concert on Sunday, to be recorded by BBC Radio 3, begins at 3pm and the musicians will talk about their programme beforehand and run the masterclass afterwards.

The performance is one of three being recorded on the BBC, following the Heath String Quartet’s concert in Leamington last week and preceding a performance by Ensemble 360 during the Leamington Music Festival weekend on May 8.

The Doric String Quartet has given two concerts at the Pump Room in Leamington in the last five years and now plays in Warwick for the first time, with a programme of quartets by Haydn and Chausson, finishing with Schubert’s epic Death and the Maiden Quartet.

Having toured with the series to Milton Keynes and Portsmouth, they will be heading on from Warwick to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, before playing in Israel in June.

The Music in the Round season continues on Sunday February 12 with the return on Ensemble 360, which will give a family concert, performing Paul Rissmann’s The Chimpanzees of Happytown, suitable for two to seven-year-olds.
