Be part of an RSC play at Stratford theatre

ONE of the UK’s most famous theatres in the UK is giving people the chance to step on stage as part of a bold new Shakespeare production.

As part of the 2012 World Shakespeare Festival, the Royal Shakespeare Company is looking for volunteers to take part in a modern-day, all black version of Julius Caesar at its Stratford theatre.

Set in Africa, the play features an all black British cast and directors are looking for black men and women over the age of 18 to take part in the production, which will run between May 28 and July 7.

Volunteers will appear in street scenes and as crowds of citizens, alongside a cast of well-known actors, including Adjoa Andoh of Holby City and Ray Fearon of Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing.

The company are looking for up to 25 people for each performance and as well as acting, volunteers will have a chance to gain an insight of behind-the-scenes work, including lighting, sound, movement, voice, stage management, costume and communication and marketing.

Director Gregory Doran said: “One of the inspirations behind setting Julius Caesar in Africa was discovering the Robben Island Shakespeare and that Nelson Mandela had chosen to autograph lines from the play, asserting that it spoke in a particular way to his continent.”

No stage experience is necessary and people can find out more by attending information sessions at the theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday next week and on Tuesday April 10 between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
