UPDATE: Seven-year-old boy from Leamington dies after bus crashes into supermarket

A seven-year-old boy from Leamington died after a bus crashed into a supermarket in Coventry.

The boy who has not yet been named, was on the top of a double decker bus that crashed into Sainsbury’s in the city centre at about 6pm on Saturday.

A woman in her 70s from Nuneaton, who was standing near the supermarket in Trinity Street, also died.

No arrests have yet been made but the driver of the bus was treated in hospital along with six others.

A young girl with cuts to her face, head and right leg who was rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital after the collision.

The bus driver and four other people were taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

The driver, a man in his fifties, was treated for neck and shoulder injuries. A man in his twenties suffered a broken arm, a second man suffered minor leg injuries, a woman in her sixties was treated for leg and arm injuries and a man was checked by hospital staff for a minor injury.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: “A young girl had injuries to her face, head and right leg and suspected chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries.

“She was taken on blue lights and under police escort to Birmingham Children’s Hospital after she had been given blood, pain relief and was anaesthetised and her airway maintained.

“Five people were taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

“One person was checked over and discharged at the scene.”

Superintendent Paul Keasey, head of the Central Motorway Police Group, said: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this evening’s tragic event; we have specially trained officers with the families at this difficult time.

“We hope to carry out a swift investigation and I would like to thank people who have already come forward who witnessed the collision.

“This is a busy area of Coventry city centre and we hope to keep disruption to a minimum as our investigation continues; no-one has been arrested at this stage.”

West Midlands Police said: “A seven-year-old boy from Leamington, who was travelling on the top of the bus, died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

“A woman from Nuneaton, believed to be in her 70s who was a pedestrian in Trinity Street, also died at the scene. Specialist officers are supporting the families at this time.”

The supermarket remains cordoned off while police investigations continue into the collision.

There were also a number of road closures in place with routes into the city centre closed off to buses on Saturday night.

These have all now re-opened.
