King, 22, will continue to play a supporting role within the driver line-up, at the same time as contending the GP2 Series with Racing Engineering.

King got his first taste of the MR03B car in testing in December and it was his performance in Abu Dhabi that convinced Manor’s racing director Dave Ryan he was the right man for the job.

“It was clear that he’d taken full advantage of the opportunity to get under the skin of the team and understand the systems, processes and people,” said Ryan.

“Over the winter months he helped us to refine driver installation with the new chassis, pending the signing of our race drivers, so the development driver role really is mutually beneficial.”

And while delighted to be taking on the development role for a second year, Harbury-based King is in no doubt where his future lies.

“I racked up 300k in that test and loved every second in the car. But what I want to do now is race one and I’m flat out working to achieve that.”
