Williams retains heavyweight belt with fine display

Williams dominated the contest, making the most of both his height and reach advantage as well as his pinpoint accuracy to pick up a unanimous decision against the hard-hitting Etches.

The 17-year-old was recently selected for the England squad and coach Adam Blockley said he was rarely tested by his opponent.

He said: “At over 6ft 6in and still growing, Lewis was just too big and strong for his shorter opponent, who while game couldn’t find a answer to Lewis’ ramrod jab and hurtful body shots.”

Fellow Cleary’s boxer Norbu Sunang-Joret was also on the bill in his second skills bout, with Edwin Cleary believing the switch-hitter is now ready to make the step up to competitive boxing.

“My former coach Brendan Ingle would love Norbu,” said Cleary.

“He’s a bag of tricks, you just can’t work him out.

“He’s really taken to the system at Cleary’s and developed his own style.”

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Jordan Kendall bowed out of the England Boxing Schools Championships after suffering a narrow defeat to Harry Pullen (Far Cotton ABC).

Kendall did not look out of place in only his third bout, only losing out due to a little bit of inexperience.

“As a novice he pushed one of the top lads all the way,” said Cleary.

“He’s a fantastic talent and has really put in the effort over the last two months.”

Fitzpatrick’s Gym’s Sean Leahy continued his progress with victory over Coventry Boys’ Asim Khan.

The 15-year-old had won one and lost one of his two previous contests against Khan, who was a late replacement for his original opponent.

“We told him to come back with nothing less than a unanimous decision,” said head coach Derek Fitzpatrick.

“We wanted him to draw a line under it and that’s exactly what he did.

“He held the centre of the ring, boxed at range and mixed it up when he needed to.”

Leahy’s stablemate Bella Madden, meanwhile, will be the club’s first representative at the Haringey Box Cup which takes place at the Alexandra Palace in London from June 17-19.
