Midlands champion Finch has nothing to fear ahead of Nationals, says Cleary

The laidback fighter lost the opening round but took the second before upping the tempo in the final three minutes to clinch the title.

The youngster now goes on to face Sharpstyle fighter Jacob Smith in the National pre quarter-final stage at Newdigate on Sunday and despite his inexperience, coach Edwin Cleary believes Finch has what it takes to make his mark at national level.

“Winning a vest was his first target,” said Cleary. “It’s a great achievement for any young boxer and more so for Josh as he’s really a novice in an elite championship.

“He’s put in the hard work and I’m positive Josh will push on to become a national star, whether it’s this season or next.”

Finch becomes the 12th boxer from the gym to pick up a Midlands vest, joining the likes of Danny Quartermaine, Michael Jephcott and Sean Greenfield, who will all be in action tomorrow night on the latest Cleary’s show.

The Trident College card features a host of boxers from the district, with doors opening at 8pm and boxing starting at 8.30pm.
