Bears women are on the rise after Turney stars
Warwickshire Bears' women clinched promotion to Division Two in only their second year as a team courtesy of a 28-22 win over Eastern Blue Stars at Nottingham Wildcats Arena.
With only six available players it was always going to be a tough challenge for an inexperienced squad.
However, with a strong defence limiting the Blue Stars main scorer Kate Dickings and MVP Anna Turney starring at the other end, Bears built up a commanding 13-7 after the first quarter.
Bears extended their advantage to nine points in the second quarter and preserved their cushion going into the final quarter, which they started 23-12 up.
Blue Stars gave it everything in the closing stages and steadily narrowed the gap.
But with the clock against them and in the face of a resilient defensive showing, they came up short to see Bears crowned Division 3B champions.
Warwickshire Bears captain Aimee Hillson was overjoyed with the result, saying: “The team have played so well this season, and the addition of three new players has been brilliant.
“We’ve gelled together as if we’ve been playing much longer as a team.
“I’m so proud of the girls and very excited for what the future holds for the Bears Women.”
Coach Jacob Robinson was equally enthusiastic, saying it reflected the hard work put in by the squad.
“That was a perfect end to a good season for the girls,” he said.
“Great commitment from everyone travelling up to Nottingham for every weekend of games and promotion was definitely earned.
“Now is time to get the hard work in ready for next year.”
n The Bears are still looking for a sponsor for the team and also always looking to recruit new members, especially female and junior players.
