Despite having to undergo several medical procedures during her studies, 22-year-old Laura Melles - who has Apert Syndrome, which affects one in every 100,000 children and results in the fusion of bones - has completed a HND in advanced practice in work with children and families at Leamington College.

Laura was supported by the college’s learning support team. Her mentor Phillipa Phillips said: “We give students other skills on top of assisting them with accessing the course.”

Talking about the support she has received, Laura said: “They’ve been so amazing and helpful. They really get to know you - personally and professionally - and adapt the help to suit your needs.

“Now my HND is complete, I’m looking to work full-time in the industry with my ultimate dream being to run an arts studio for children.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Philippa and the team - it’s like a big family! They’ve made me who I am today.”

Philippa added: “Laura has worked really hard. We’re so proud of her and wish her all the best for her future career.”
