Ancient Cubbington pear tree's "days are numbered" as HS2 work continues on surrounding land

Anti-HS2 campaigner Frances Wilmot has sent in this phorograph of the ancient wild pear tree surrounded by teams of workmen removing trees on the edge of South Cubbington Wood to make a cutting for the high-speed rail track.

Frances said: "The pear tree's days are numbered, having just produced its autumnal display of red leaves that no-one can enjoy this year as the public can no longer walk under its spreading branches that have been there since 1820 or earlier.

She added: "At present, the river bridge and surroundings are still peaceful with magnificent autumn colours on the trees - until HS2 start work on the viaduct nearby.

"It's a sad sight to see the wood being destroyed and my favourite walk not now recognisable."
