Learn how to fly in a yoga studio

Anyone who is looking for an interesting and social way to get fit can learn the art of AcroYoga at a convention in Leamington this month.

The practice, which blends acrobatics with yoga and methods of alternative therapy, has gained a steady following in London and Brighton - but this is the first time an AcroYoga intensive workshop is taking place north of the capital.

Leamington AcroYoga instructor Janni Scott-Walton said: “Remember when, as a child, an adult would pop you on their feet and play ‘aeroplane’? Effectively that is one of the starting poses of AcroYoga.

“Remember how much fun that was, how liberating and how much trust you had that you could fly and safely land? Well, that is the joy of this practice - it cultivates trust and support, allows us to do things we never knew we could do, reminds us of how we can play even as adults and, in doing so, encourages an incredible sense of community.”

The AcroYoga Elemental Immersion will take place at Spencer Yard in Leamington from June 18 to 22 with instructors Julia Weis and Jacqui Wan, with options to take part for one day or for the full five days.

Skills covered during the course include: lunar and sola Asana, supine and prone Thai massage, forward and backward ‘therapeutic flying’, ‘acrobatic flying’ and flying transitions. There is no need to have had experience of AcroYoga or yoga and people do not need to turn up with a partner.
