A Kenilworth radio station is being relaunched this Saturday (April 8) with a live broadcast in Talisman square.
Radio Abbey, based in the Kenilworth Centre in Abbey End and run by volunteers, will be broadcasting from 10am to 1pm live from the square, with presenters changing every half hour.
Visitors to the live broadcast will be able to meet some of the station’s team and find out how to get involved with the station in the future, either behind the microphone or behind the scenes.
The station had to close last spring due to a lack of volunteers able to run the service sustainably. But Radio Abbey was not completely abandoned, and there was always hope for a relaunch as long as the right team was in place.
Now, Radio Abbey has recently undergone a rebuild with a core team of 10 volunteers, with about half working behind the scenes and the other half presenting, working together to share with Kenilworth a variety of different programmes.
These include lifestyle shows, indie and rock through to gaming, a show for students and the station’s very own radio drama.
Chair of trustees at the Kenilworth Centre John Whitehouse said: “With community ventures like this it’s all about the people.
“We’ve got the core skills we need, and providing we make sure we’re keeping up a programme of training new people and building those skills I think it’s going to be sustainable.”
Radio Abbey broadcasts 24/7, and can be listened to online here
