“I understand the Prime Minister’s decision to resign though I profoundly regret it.

“He made the brave and right decision to give the electorate a say directly on the question of our membership of the EU.

“We should now come together to build a future outside it.”

David Cameron announced on Friday morning that he will “steady the ship” but aimed to have a new Prime Minister in place by October.

The Prime Minister said the British people had voted to leave the European Union and that must be accepted. He said it was not a decision taken lightly and there can be no doubt about the result.
