A survey carried out in Talisman Square found just over half could recognise the brand’s logo, and Fairtrade products coffee, bananas and chocolate were named with flowers also getting a mention. Ethics and fair price was cited by 64 percent when asked to describe the brand.

When asked to name Fairtrade products, the following were named by shoppers:

Coffee 31%

Bananas 15%

Chocolate/ cocoa 15%

Tea 15%

Clothing 5%

Sugar 4%

Fruit 3%

Flowers 3%

Cosmetics, beans, water, mangoes, cotton, traditional gifts, honey each 1%

And when asked what the brand name meant to them, the following reasons were highlighted.

No middle men in production chain 8%

Governments fixing the price, ethical produce, organic produce, improved schools, favouring cash

crops, tax on foreign producers 4%
