The Marmen String Quartet will give a concert in the Unitarian Chapel in High Street at 7.30pm on Friday May 13.

Richard Phillips, of promoter Leamington Music, said: “One of the reasons why the towns of Warwick and Leamington have a national reputation for putting on chamber music originates in the Unitarian Chapel.

“It goes back to the discovery in 1984 that the then recently renovated building was a brilliant venue for this intimate music. The chapel’s acoustic and beautiful surroundings, particularly with the garden in the summer, proved so popular that inevitably concerts had to be transferred to bigger venues like the Pump Room.

“The Festival Weekend and the International String Quartets winter series both started in the Chapel over 25 years ago. BBC Radio 3 made a few recordings there and musicians who performed there included some big names.”

The Marmen Quartet will play two quartets by Haydn, one by Mozart and end the concert with Beethoven’s Quartet in F minor Opus 95. The whole programme is of music composed over a period of less than 40 vintage years in the Classical period.

The concert also makes the connection between Leamington Music and Music in the Round, the chamber music flagship funded by Arts Council England and trusts which has provided more than a dozen years of outstanding concerts put on in Warwick and Leamington.

The Marmen Quartet is the first holder of the Music in the Round Bridge scheme which will last for three years. The Quartet was especially chosen by the late Peter Cropper, leader of the world famous Lindsay String Quartet which played many times in Warwick and Leamington for more than 20 years. The Marmen Quartet is tipped for a big future and is already performing in Sweden regularly, as well as throughout the United Kingdom.
