They have become Kenilworth's largest volunteer group since they formed just a few months ago - but they still need more support so they can carry on helping others.

The Covid-19 Kenilworth Support is a community-based group of volunteers helping the vulnerable members of our community during these difficult times during the pandemic. It has recently been awarded charity status.

The group now has 331 volunteers but organisers are keen to get more people on board as the role of the group changes during the easing of lockdown.

But it is cooks that they are looking for in the more immediate future.

Molly Bufton Stear set up Molly's Meals to help feed the vulnerable but now many of the cooks have either gone back to work or left the town, including Molly herself.

Addressing the Kenilworth Community Forum meeting on Monday, Helen Braithwaite, from the Covid-19 Kenilworth Support, said: "We are trying to make this more sustainable.

"With some people leaving, we are looking to expand our team of cooks so if you can help please get in contact with us."

"The Engine and The Gauntlet pubs have offered their support and they have been so, so willing to help."

The group has continued to deliver prescriptions, take calls and offer advice and welfare support to those in need over the past few months.

Now it is looking at new ways to help, as the lockdown eases, via a new survey among those who need help, as their needs may have changed since the end of March.

Get Active packs are being put together and they are also hoping to do socially distanced assisted walks for some people, working alongide the local medical centres - the Kenilworth Round Table has donated walking frames.

The support group also have a set of iPads (funded by the Kenilworth Round Table) that they can take into people's homes and set them up so they can talk to friends and loved ones.

Kenilworth mayor Richard Dickson, who chaired the Kenilworth Community Forum and is also a trustee of the Covid-19 Kenilworth Support, told the meeting: "With 331 volunteers, this must be the largest volunteer army in town.

"This is a wonderful example of the town pulling together."

Former town mayor Michael Coker added: "As someone who has benefited from this group I would like to say a sincere thank you to them."
