Nights of games and glamour

The 1920s will roar back to life at Leamington Art Gallery & Museum at a night of glamour, dancing, jazz and cocktails.

The venue is holding the event on Saturday May 15 as part of the Museums at Night festival.

Doors will be open from 7pm for visitors to look around the galleries and enjoy a welcome drink.

From 7.45pm there will be the chance to soak up the late night atmosphere of the Art Gallery & Museum with sketches by the talented Cubbington Players. Visitors can chose from two comedies on arrival: Nick Hall’s Pastiche, a play of mistaken identity and absurd deception, and Don’t Blame It On The Boots.

At 8.30pm, guests will move through to the Assembly Rooms to buy cocktails from the era in the Annex bar and learn some dance moves with Strictly Jitterbug, ready for the band to begin. Strictly Jitterbug are experienced dance teachers with expertise in East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and Charleston.

Visitors can then enjoy lively 1920s jazz music from the Gershwin Gang in the Assembly Rooms from 9pm. The Gershwin Gang are a jazz band with more than 20 years’ experience of performing at weddings, private parties and corporate events.

There will also be a photo-booth, where guests will be able to kit themselves out with 1920s props and vintage costume. Dress from the era is encouraged but not compulsory.

Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum held a Museums at Night: Post War Party in 2015 which was a huge success with guests travelling as far as London and Scotland to attend.

St John’s Museum in Warwick is joining in with its own Night at the Museum on Friday May 13 with a fun-filled evening of games and toys. The event allows visitors to discover games from both collections and have fun playing some. There’s plenty to do – from space hoppers to ludo and Scrabble to giant versions of some popular games, such as jenga, Connect 4 and draughts.

Families are welcome from 5pm to 7 pm is for families, while a later slot, from 7pm to 9pm, is for adults only. Entry is free, there is no need to book, and refreshments will be available.
