Band finally releasing debut album '“ after forming in 1977

Romany Pie formed in 1977, growing out of the variety group at the town’s Talisman Theatre. The band have been performing hundreds of folk songs in thousands of gigs all over the area ever since.

The only place they haven’t really played is the recording studio – until now. And nearly 40 years after first picking up their instruments, Under The Crust, the band’s first CD, is finally being released.

Guitarist Matthew Salisbury said: “We just wanted something so that in years to come we could remember what we sounded like.

“Finally recording songs we’ve been playing for decades has been very revealing.

“We’ve been forced to look at things we’ve always done and actually get them right for once!”

Founding member and permanent fixture John Ellam has been leading the band with his banjo from day one, while double bassist Davis Roberts and guitarist Matthew Salisbury have clocked up about 40 years service between them.

Tha band have appeared all over the local area as well as taking their traditional folk sound to places as far afield as Germany, Norway, Singapore and Canada.

As well as selling copies at future gigs, the band will be launching the new disc at Kenilworth’s Tree House Bookshop in The Square on Saturday April 16 from 11.30am onwards, when they will be playing songs and signing copies of the CD.
