Southam moved to the summit of Midlands Three West (South) thanks to a no-nonsense 26-6 win over Woodrush - the first time in 20 years that they have topped a division.

With the weather again playing havoc with fixtures, the game was switched to Southam’s 4G pitch, with the hosts kicking off up the slope and into fierce wind and rain.

The first points fell to Woodrush with a converted penalty awarded for handling in the ruck.

Southam made several forays into the Woodrush 22, but any lost ball soon ended up with them pegged back on their own line as the visitors utilised the wind to kick deep.

Woodrush doubled their tally with a 40m penalty after Southam had gone in over the top.

The hosts then got some phases going and a lineout on the Woodrush ten-metre line was well taken by Flo Neale. The ball was driven on by the forwards before a quick recycle was picked up by wing- forward Justin Urbonas, who fought his way around the outside for the try.

The conversion was missed to leave Woodrush with a slender one-point interval lead.

Southam went in front after the break following a series of penalty concessions from the visitors. After several thrusts were stopped on the line, Urbonas crashed over from eight metres on the diagonal for a try converted by Will Grindal.

Southam were forced to defend as Woodrush tried to get back into the game and stole the ball on halfway. Will Woods hacked on and four Southam players were queueing up under the posts waiting for the ball to stop bobbling. Centre Pete Burnell was the grateful recipient, with Grindal again converting.

Southam claimed the bonus point as the match drew to a close, with Liam Monro taking a quick penalty on the Woodrush 22 and slicing through the defence. The wing-forward was brought down just before the line, but managed to stretch over for final try of the game, converted by Grindal.
