Resurgent Murray is targeting Rio swansong

The 50-year-old is enjoying something of a resurgence since putting retirement plans on hold, winning individual and team gold at the first Paralympic ranking competition of the year, the European Continental Cup, in Barcelona recently.

A dominant Great Britain squad came back from Spain with seven medals, with Murray part of the BC1/2 team which lived up to their number one world ranking with a 10-1 win over the host nation in the final.

However, it was his individual gold which meant the most to Murray, justifying his decision to remodel his game following London.

“Two golds were a bit of a surprise,” said Murray who beat team-mate Joshua Rowe 4-1 in the BC2 final.

“I was ranked three but it was a bit of a surprise to win seven straight matches.

“There have been a number of changes since 2013. I changed my wheelchair and although it sounds little it was a massive change for me.

“It meant I had to change my style of throw.

“The early part of last year I struggled in competitions and twice I failed to get out of my pool.

“But I have had one year with the chair and this year I am more relaxed and not overthinking things. I’m starting to enjoy it again.”

But after saying London would be his last Games, the former World and Paralympic champion is keen to stress 2016 will be the end of the road.

“I never envisioned going for Rio. That was not the plan,” he said.

“The plan was to help the youngsters come through and mentor them.

“But while I’m still producing the selectors are reluctant for me not to play.

“However, after Rio that’ll be it for me.”
