Leamington put on its first British Weightlifting contest in 15 years on Saturday with the Central & South West Weightlifting Championships taking place at Warwickshire College.

Hosted by the Henley-in-Arden-based KBT Weightlifting Club, the competition attracted 50 competitors, ranging from under-17 boys and girls to masters lifters (over-35s).

Leamington’s Andy Soulby recorded a personal best on his competitive debut, while KBT team-mate Ivan Mihai qualified for the Senior British Weightlifting Championships.

KBT head coach Sam Dovey, is now hoping to put on more competitions in the town.

“I was very happy with the contest and the results of my lifters,” he said. “This will hopefully lead to many more contests back at Leamington.”
