Highflyers head to Warwick

The Class 3 Highflyer Bloodstock Four Years Old Chase will top the seven-race card for Warwick’s second jumps meeting of the season on Wednesday, writes David Hucker.

Just three runners went to post for the Highflyer Chase last year, but it proved to be an eventful contest, with 5-1 outsider Tatispout making all the running and coming home alone after both market leader Tonic Mellysse and Tornade D’Estruval had fallen.

Wednesday’s action kicks off at 12.50pm with the Seddon Handicap Hurdle over two miles and the meeting finishes with the EBF David Nicholson Memorial Fillies’ “Junior” Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race over one mile and six furlongs at 3.50pm.

Trainer Charlie Longsdon was the man in form at the opening meeting two weeks ago, notching up a double, courtesy of Hazy Tom and Venceremos.

Both winners beat the race favourites, with 15-8 shot Hazy Tom denying Cantlow by three-quarters of a length in the feature Colliers Reduce Empty Business Rates Novices’ Chase and 20-1 outsider Venceremos beating Mischievous Milly by a short head in the concluding Whitsun Bloodstock George Mernagh Memorial Mares’ National Hunt Flat Race.

“We were delighted to see such a fantastic turnout to our first jumps meeting of the National Hunt season,” said commercial manager Lee Moulson.

“For those thinking of joining us on Wednesday, we have put together a special package called the Winter Warmer in our 1707 restaurant, involving admission, racecard, glass of wine and roast of the day, all for just £30.”
