Worsfold brought in to cover for Newton loss

Brakes manager Paul Holleran has offset the loss of Danny Newton with the loan signing of prolific Harrogate Town striker Ashley Worsfold.

Newton will miss Leamington’s next five matches after collecting a second successive red card in the 1-0 defeat at Gainsborough Town on Saturday.

It means Brakes will be without their captain and leading goalscorer until the final three games of the Conference North season, while attacking options were further depleted by winger Matt Dodd’s decision to join Stourbridge this week.

However, Holleran believes he has pulled off something of a coup in attracting 24-year-old former Alfreton Town forward Worsfold to the New Windmill.

“It is difficult at this stage of the season to bring in a striker who can score goals at this level,” said Holleran.

“Ash has been back since January after breaking his leg before the season but with the amount of strikers Harrogate have got, it was aways going to be difficult for him to get a run of games.

“He scored 16 goals last season and he is a player that always catches the eye.

He’s a good player, has a good pedigree and ticks all the boxes.

It’s a short-term option that suits both clubs and the player wants to do it which is important.

“Ash really wants to get a proper 90 minutes in and he thrives on scoring goals.”
