Droobers' Emmerson crowned best of British

Octavian Droobers' Julie Emmerson was crowned W20 Elite champion at the British Individual and Relay Championships at Brown Clee Hill, on the Burwarton Estate, Shropshire.

Emmerson took 52min 49sec on the 7.175k course on Saturday to join clubmate Sheila Carey on the top step of the rostrum, with Carey winning the 4.25k W70 Long course in 69:50.

The men’s champion was former Droober Graham Gristwood, who is now a member of Forth Valley Orienteers in Scotland.

Matthew Elkington was sixth.

There were also podium places for Droobers captain Alistair Powell (2nd on the M35 Long 9.775k course ), Hilary Simpson (2nd on the W75 3.55k course), Harrison McCartney (3rd on the M18 Elite 9.775k course), Anne Straube (3rd on the W40 Long 7.175k course) and Lesley Ross who was third on the W50 Long 6.125k course.

The following day at the British Relays, organised by Droobers, the club’s M14 trio of Oliver Lunn, Oliver Flippance and Felix Lunn were crowned British champions, finishing nearly four minutes clear of the Bristol Orienteering team.

Mike Hampton, Peter and Sheila Carey were winners of the M/W70 class, taking 1:51:21 to come in just eight seconds clear of Wrekin Orienteers.

Elkington, alongside two fellow University of Sheffield runners, missed out on winning the men’s premier race by 20 seconds.

Pippa Smart, Tabitha Lunn and Florence Lunn were sixth in the W14 relay race as were Peter Markham, Josie Smart and Finley Flippance in the 
M/W12 Mini Relay.
