North Leamington School is reflecting on another successful sporting campaign as the academic year draws to a close.
Last year North Leamington footballers won three of the five available ‘A’ leagues against all secondary schools in Mid and South Warwickshir. This year has seen a continued level of success for both boys and girls across all age groups.

The year 7 boys' football team reached the District Cup final, losing to a talented Aylesford side, and came third in the league. Meanwhile the year 8 boys' football team won the District ‘B’ league and are now promoted to the ‘A’ division.

For year 8 the rugby team won the Under-13 Leamington floodlit tournament.

More football success came from the year 9 boys, who took the ‘A’ league title for the second year in a row - again winning all their league matches. They reached the District Cup final, losing 2-1 to Kenilworth following a late penalty, and reached the fifth round of the English Schools Cup.

North Leamington’s under-14 girls won the Warwickshire Emerging Schools’ contact rugby tournament, not conceding a try in the process.

The year 10 boys’ football team won the District ‘B’ league with a 100 per cent record and are promoted to the ‘A’ division next year. The side was captained by Ed Holden.

Meanwhile the year 11 boys not only won the football ‘A’ division for a second year in a row but took the district basketball league title as well.

Not to be outdone, North Leamington’s under-16 girls became county champions at football, beating Avon Valley School 1-0 in the final.

The boys’ under-18 football team went further than any other Warwickshire side in the English Schools’ Cup, reaching the sixth round where they narrowly lost 3-2 to last year’s semi-finalists West London Academy.

Individually students have also kept up the winning mentality. Ben Lees is the county senior triple jump champion.

Ben is still a year young for his event so can defend his title, as can Warwickshire Schools under-16 girls table tennis champion Charlotte Spencer.

Laurence Sweeney is the county schools under-13 boys’ table tennis champion and has a national ranking of 20.

Rob Morey, head of PE, said: “It is great this year having achievements across all age groups as well as seeing the girls somewhat upstage the boys by being crowned county under-16 football champions.

“It’s also great to see a students rewarded for their continued dedication to individual sports by being the best in the county at their age groups.

“Hopefully a similar level of achievement is maintained next year, leading us in to the new school and the fantastic facilities we will have to further enable students to achieve their potential.”
