Astonishingly Racing Club Warwick survived in the Midland Alliance.
Their last-day escape from the Midland Alliance relegation places would have been dismissed as unbelievable had the story appeared in Roy of the Rovers, let alone the Courier.
Going into the game at Cradley Town second bottom, Racing Club were three points and six goals behind Biddulph Victoria and safety. We therefore needed to win by five clear goals and then pray Biddulph would lose at Barwell.
Not only this, but in the unlikely event the points and goals deficit was turned around we would have to win by four more than third bottom Studley as well. Pigs would have to be cleared for take off for us to have any chance! 1,000-1 anybody?
On a beautiful day and in front of a total "crowd" of 42 - made up almost entirely of travelling Warwick supporters - amazingly we found ourselves three up at half-time and then learned that both Biddulph and Studley were losing.
One minute after the restart Tom Leaver scored his third and our fourth and the possibility of escape was suddenly alive and kicking. Choice remarks to the referee by two Cradley players brought the Hammers down to nine men and the award of a penalty for the all-important fifth goal courtesy of Martin Hutchcox saw us round off the scoring.
After the final whistle we waited an eternity to learn the fate of our opponents. Biddulph had lost but Studley had pulled back a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 at home to Boldmere.
The margin of Studley's victory wasn't good enough to lift them out of the bottom three because they were level on points and goal difference with Racing Club who were safe due to goals scored! Dramatic or what?
Had we gone down Racing Club's exciting ground plans would have been dead in the water. As we drove away from Beeches View Avenue I'm sure I caught sight of a flock of pigs flying into the sunset.
