"So what is going on at Brakes?" I suspect the usual mundane but exciting routine of running a Southern League football club.
It's a mixture of differing tasks and views, a lot of hard, unpaid work by the committed few, the usual politics regarding how things should be done that exist in most clubs - football, cricket, whatever.

Given that, we always sorted out our diffe
rences in the past within the club and not on the back page of the Courier.

I resigned from the board towards the end of last season as I did not agree with many of the views our ex-chairman wanted to implement. My decision - I wasn't sacked or anything else.

Over the years many board members resigned their positions for various reasons, in some cases due to differing opinions and basically not getting on with other board members.

But during my term as chairman over 20 years they have been dignified enough to keep their reasons within the club. Many of them still attend games and support the club.

Regarding Simon Steele's comments on the inside pages regarding finance etc, I find this strange as this information has, in the past, been kept within the boardroom and reported to shareholders and interested parties at the annual meeting. In this case that will be next summer.

The references to this season's budget, which was set by the board including the ex-chairman and of which I and nobody else other than the management team should be aware, will I am sure be sustainable - as stated by club chairman Mr Jim Scott.

A number of the currrent board members involved in setting the budget for the current season have been with the club for a number of years, including many with me when I was chairman. I have every confidence in them.

Regarding the club's future ambitions, would Mr Steele prefer to stagnate and not be positive in moving forward? I think not.

The club's progress over the years has benefited the sports section of the Courier and the club, for which we have to thank Mr Steele and his predecessor Mr Doug Hughes.

I share the ex-chairman's views regarding finance for the future. This is not something new - I and all past and present board members have had to live with this over the last 20 years.

We have always risen to the challenge with the help of our major sponsors, especially Mr John Dibble of BPS and recently Mr Harvey Hunt of ACS and Messrs Graham Fulford and Ben reynolds of TGFP. I'm sure this will continue.

There is no need to think the club will not prosper just because Mick Brady, Mr David Hucker and our respectfully remembered colleague Mr Don Hartwell are not running the club.

We three can be rightfully proud of what we have helped to achieve and wish Mr Jim Scott and his team and of course Jason Cadden, Morton Titterton and Keith Orme all the very best for the difficult but exciting times ahead.
