When 11-year-old Ian Wainwright was admitted to Warwick Hospital with a sore elbow he was terrified of having his blood taken and never thought he would have to have an operation.
But following his "fun" experience in the children's unit, Ian of Northend is backing a hospital appeal for funds.
He began complaining of elbow pain on October 22 and his mother Catrina believed he had just fallen over. Three days later he was still unwell and went to see his GP who sent him straight to Warwick Hospital, where he was treated for septic arthritis, a condition that causes an infection to get into the joint space and restrict movement.
The Dassett Primary School boy was given an operation to drain fluid from his right elbow and given a strong dose of antibiotics.
Ian, who has now made a full recovery, stayed in Warwick hospital with his mother for ten days.
Staff at the Lakin Road site are currently raising money to provide "five-star" play facilities when the children's ward moves to a newer part of the hospital.
Ian enjoyed his time in the children's ward. He said:"My elbow hurt but doctors and nurses were really kind. It was fun.
"I think the new play area is a good idea as children would probably get bored otherwise being in bed all the time."
Describing her son's illness, Miss Wainwright said: "It was a complete shock. I never expected it to lead to him having an operation.
"The doctors and nurses were fantastic and were brilliant with Ian who was scared of having his blood taken at first.
"I think the appeal is a great idea and any improvement will be good for nurses and patients."
She added: "I think the experience has made me more aware and I felt bad for not taking him to the doctor straight away, but you never know with boys as they are always knocking themselves."
Businesses and schools throughout the district have held fundraising events in aid of the appeal and Warwick Hospital employees have produced a cookbook featuring recipes donated by staff, patients and relatives.
The book costs £5 and is for sale at the Courier offices in Hamilton Terrace, Leamington or is available by mail order.
Anyone interested should send a check for £6, including £1 for postage and packaging, to: Liz Waters, Paediatric Project Manager, Warwick Hospital, Lakin Road, Warwick, CV34 4DA.
