Warwickshire pupils meet their favourite authors

Hundreds of pupils from Warwickshire schools met some of their favourite authors when they attended the announcement of the 2014 Junior Book Award in Leamington.

The pupils from a record 35 different schools attended the event at the Spa Centre last week, organised by Warwickshire Schools Library Service, at which Katherine Rundell, author of Rooftoppers and Janis Mackay, author of The Accidental Time Traveller were announced as the winner and runner-up respectively.

The two authors spoke to the pupils and kept them fully engaged about the joy of writing books but also the thrill of reading, and they answered a range of challenging questions.

Pupils who take part in the awards vote to determine the winner from a shortlist of four books - all published in the previous calendar year.

The other two titles were Whale Boy by Nicola Davies and The Society of 13 by Gareth P Jones.

All four books were hugely popular with children and teachers alike and the final event had a buzz, with pupils queuing at the end to have their copies signed by the authors.

Stella Thebridge, manager of the Schools Library Service said: “We are thrilled that this award continues to provide so much pleasure to the school pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 who sign up each year.

“It’s pleasing to see so many enthusing about their reading of enjoyable high quality fiction. We know this improves their achievement across all aspects of their life.”

The 2014 Warwickshire Secondary Book Award was won by Gillian Cross with After Tomorrow.
